 Historically cattle have been enclosed using barbed wire and woven wire fences. A sufficient option for cattle is a four or five-strand barbed wire fence. For robust containment, heavyweight and extra-heavyweight woven wire fences, incorporating one or more strands of barbed wire above the fence, are an excellent choice. When it comes to cattle-handling facilities, heavy wire panel fences are highly recommended. To prevent escape, the fence height should be a minimum of 5 feet. Additionally, fences should be visible to reduce animal stress and facilitate smooth movement through the facility. 

The crucial aspect of horse fencing lies in its visibility. Fences that lack visibility, such as high-tensile and barbed wire fences, should be avoided for horses to prevent potential injuries in case the animals get entangled in the wires. A highly recommended option for horses is the "S" or Square Knot Horse Fence.

Woven wire fencing with openings smaller than 4 inches is considered appropriate for horses. To enhance visibility, it is advisable to add a single 1"x 6" board at the top of the fence.

Historically, barbed wire fences have been commonly utilized for sheep or goats. However, these fences are not advisable for sheep due to the risk of the barbs pulling on their fleece. When moderate grazing pressure is applied to the enclosed area, barbed wire fences do not effectively confine goats. For hornless sheep and goats, heavyweight or extra-heavyweight woven wire fences are highly recommended. The fence height must be a minimum of 4 feet to prevent animals from climbing over, and depending on the breed, it may need to be even higher. Mesh wire fences also serve as excellent options for confining hornless sheep and goats. Temporary fencing is not recommended for them, as they tend to easily escape.

Barbed wire and cable fences are not suitable for confining swine effectively. Woven wire fences, incorporating one or more strands of barbed wire strategically placed along the ground to discourage rooting, offer reliable control. Medium and heavyweight woven wire fences featuring small openings are ideal for restraining pigs. The recommended maximum fence height is 4 1/2 feet. These fences should be constructed close to the ground to prevent pigs from escaping by rooting underneath. 

This pertains to a specialized style of woven or knotted wire fencing, typically exceeding the height of other types, often standing at six feet tall or more. Characterized by a unique design, the grid sizes are graduated—starting with smaller squares near the ground to deter small wildlife, and gradually increasing in size as the fence ascends. Wildlife and deer fences prove highly effective in preventing plant-eating animals, such as deer, from accessing fields or gardens. Moreover, they serve as a protective barrier, thwarting both large and small predators from reaching livestock. 

The commonly known chicken wire fencing features a familiar small-weave diamond grid pattern, designed to safeguard poultry enclosures and garden areas. Utilizing relatively lightweight 20-gauge wire, it is woven into diamond-shaped grids ranging from one to two inches in size. Available in rolls measuring two to five feet in width, chicken wire serves as an effective barrier against foxes, hawks, and other small predators that may pose a threat to poultry. Additionally, it proves useful in protecting gardens.
